Wonderful post, Steven! I've only seen The Thin Red Line once, but I was
very moved by it! It was a very poetic movie, which is rare for a World War
Two film. (By the way, I absolutely hated Saving Private Ryan). I really do
need to see TRL again because there are too many different elements to take
in during just one sitting! I have, though, seen American Beauty five times,
and I do see connections between the two just as you do. Both of them have
the message that there is a "hidden life" behind everything, and that if you
look hard enough, you can see beauty in almost anything. In TRL, there was
beauty behind the horrors of World War Two, like the blades of grass, shown
from an extremely low angle, waiting for the enemy to attack. In AB, Ricky
found beauty in a dead bird, a plastic bag, and ultimately a dead man's eyes.

Both of these movies are extremely wonderful, and I, along with Steven,
I'm sure, recommend them to all of you bananafishers. (That sounded a bit
too much like Reading Rainbow).

But don't take MY word for it!
