Bruce and Cecilia shake some fruit from the tree...I liked Bruce's holy
sifting and agree with Cecilia that the disjunction of age between style
and character/narrator is fun once you get over it...I have to say that
reading the story still feels like plowing but what the hell, it's spring!

Regarding my interview with John Updike, my wife did most of the initial
work--the author was being imported by Colorad College in Colorado Springs
and so we asked to do the intervew and got it. I think he liked us
because we are easterners and Colorado Springs is a strange land of
strangers. I liked Mr. Updike. He seemed modest, interested in writing,
and had a wry sense of humor. He wore penny loafers, grey slacks, blue
button down shirt, a blue sports coat and a tie I cannot remember. I do
recall his appreciative nod when I brought him tea. The whole time we
were talking I could see a smile, not on his face but not far from his
talking--nothing sly so much as light in his eyes...will
