Nice story, Scottie, and interestingly enough I had seen
the almost identical story with King Solomon as the protagonist
   as opposed to a merchant.

However, the juxtaposition of of Bergman movies and Scottie's
story in today's mail started the old synapses connecting until
they dug up the inside back cover of a National Lampoon, circa
1972. There, above the famous Bergman image of the chess match
between Death and the knight (from The Seventh Seal?), in
recognition of the then headline grabbing chess championships, was
the headline "Let Bobby Fischer Show You How to Beat Death".
The pseudo-advertisement went on to parody some of the tactics
Fischer has used to unnerve Spassky with suggestions like
   * demand that a special chair be sent from Sweeden
   * train your weimaraner to wee-wee on his rooks
and other such inanities. But the picure and the headline said it all.

OSR-if Jane Gallagher had played checker with Death, would she
still keep her kings in the back row? Was Seymour's suitcase with
the Ortgies sent via FedEx after having been lost by the airline
(airline? what airline?) in Des Moines?

all the best, or at least better than *this*,
   Mattis
