Paul, happy pesach, and thanks...as I reqd your post I wondered if you
would mention my personal favorite, Edmund Wilson. I still consider
_Axel's Castle_ to be one of the best books of lit crit. Yes, I see the
public point, but with the web, many of us are public intellecutals in
that way that some of the heroes and heroines you mention were. I'm
afraid there was a star system when our media had less bandwidth but I'm
not sure that has to be so anymore. BTW, as a cab driver, I once won an
argument with Susan Sontag--she didn't think the FDR drive was closed for
a july 4 fireworks celebration and I did. When we reached the baricade
she softened to me but didn't seem thrilled I was getting my phd at nyu.
