Oh, dear. Between the younger Doctors Bowman and Mike's fine punk rock history, you'd think that my Scottish friend would be willing to admit that old Sid Vicious (*not* an original member of the band, by the way) is a follower. Don't tell me you were a closet Sex Pistols fan, Scottie B. It's going to blow my image of you straight to hell. We can all feel safe in crediting Joey Ramone:

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010415/en/obit_ramone_4.html

... While British bands such as the Sex Pistols and Clash
received the media attention once punk rock exploded,
both were schooled by the Ramones' tour of England that
     began on the U.S. Bicentennial - July 4, 1976 ...

``They're the daddy punk group of all time,'' said
Joe Strummer, lead singer of the Clash, in a recent Spin
     magazine interview.

Now, Sid Vicious isn't around anymore to voice his opinion, but I think we can take Strummer's word for it. Granted, old Sid was perhaps the most interesting character in the Punk Rock movement, but nope. Can't give it to you. It all began with old Joey.

... Do you REALLY think humanity changes from generation
    to generation?

Well, no. Not really. I think it's all just counterbalancing swings of a pendulum. My feeling, however, is that this pendulum has experienced a much longer swing toward the right than the left. And this article seems to indicate that it's only going to continue.

I suppose that I have to concede your point that nonconformity is in itself a sort of conformity. Jake's backlash against punk rock illustrates your point, that everything in some manner is mainstream. I've heard the complaint from more than one former punk rocker, that they left because the group accused them of not being "punk enough".

People are sheep.

I guess that's what annoyed me most about the article. It seemed to indicate that another generation of wooly bleaters is going to fail to notice when it's shearing time. And when they find themselves naked, they're not going to learn anything from it. They're going to just stand around until they grow some more wool. And then the shears will come out again.

Cripes. And with that mixed bag of metaphors, I'll need to sign off.

Regards,
Cecilia.
