I will miss Joey Ramone. The man was one of my heroes, but...

You're all wrong, it was Iggy Pop and the Stooges who started it all in
1969!

Now that I've added my argument to the unresolvable conflict...

In regards to that Atlantic survey about Princeton students "climbing the
ladder instead of bucking it" :

Ooh, a bunch of workaholic suck-asses at a school like Princeton. What a
shocker.

Where do you think the students who spend all their time studying and doing
extra credit and extra-curricular activities just so they can get into a
good college wind up going to school? Community college, while the
slackers get into the Ivy Leagues? Maybe it wasn't always that way, but
come on, we all know students who make themselves sick studying out of the
intense paranoia of what their parents will say when they're only able to
get into a university whose name contains the name of the state in which
its located.

Go somewhere like I attended, Portland State University, and you'll find
plenty of activism and involvement. Unfortunately it's almost all the kind
of "I'll show the WTO what I think of them by heaving this brick through
the window of Starbucks" mentality that makes people who aren't complete
morons cringe.

I'm sure a lot of colleges have lots of people who go around thinking "Give
me a cause, any cause," though. Like the way freeing Tibet isn't an issue
until the Beastie Boys tell them it is. A lot of members of this
generation can be convinced to rally behind a cause, but they will neither
understand nor care about the reasons why. I think a lot of people who are
able to think for themselves don't want any part of that mindless
resistance, or to be associated with it in any way. It's hard to be
concerned about "the issues" when the people out there protesting them are
a thousand times more annoying themselves.
