Hey there bananafish...especially Scottie,
Let me say I am EXTREMELY saddened by Joey's untimely demise, however I
hear from good sources in NYC that he was in considerable pain towards the
end so lets all be greatful that it was alieviated. It was the Ramones who
brought me into punk-rock and the Ramones whom I always turn back to
whenever I grow disallusioned by it's recently apparent commercial intent
(started by the Sex Pistols I must add) Scottie, I have the utmost respect
for you, please don't doubt that, but the Sex Pistols??? They did not start
punk-rock or even give it it's name (done by "punk" magazine circa '73 by
Legs McNeil due to that fact that Telly Savalis used to call his villains
"lousy punks"...legs took to referring to the Ramones and the NY dolls as
such also..the name stuck)! The Pistols in fact, commercialized and
packeged punk in easy to handle doses. And Sid? I LOVE Sid as an icon, his
poster is looking at me right now, but he was a "coat-hanger" to quote John
Lydon. He was not their first bassist and did not play on very much of
their album (their ONLY official album by the way), I don't think he even
COULD play bass...but he was an image, and a great one. He was the only one
in the pistols who was real, and ironically, NOT in it for the image. Also,
The Ramones started in 1974...while the pistols were not assembled by Malcom
McLauren until '76. But enough trivial arguing, all I wanted to say is with
Joey Ramone, and era died. He had a vision of returning music back into the
hands of people with passion, not necessarily talent, and speaking out
against social norms. He did not think he was starting a "new style" The
Ramones thought they were reminicent of '50's style bubble-gum pop, but they
sang about what they knew...and what they knew was ridin' the bus to
Rockaway, and sniffing glue. They were simple and amazing in their
simplicity...in an era of the stadium-rock-20-minute-solo-playing guitar
god, the Ramones blasted through with 3-chords and 1 1/2 minute songs about
what they knew, and they saved Rock 'N roll. There are few bands like them
around, I'll turn to Rancid now in hopes of a new generation. In terms of
rebellion, I will write more later but for now, I have massive amounts of
physiology work to do...anyone a Sepia (cuttlefish) expert out there?
Thanx,
Adios Amigos,
-pat
