I read a review of it last week (not as kind a review, though; I
forget the source, sorry) and I actually read the germ of the book,
the part that concerns William Maxwell, which was published as a long
essay in (I think) The New Yorker somewhat before Maxwell died.

The essay, which grew into a book, was quite touching and memorable and
gentle -- as befits its subject. I recall thinking, after reading it,
that Wilkinson was one of the luckier fellows around, to have had such
tutelage. And it wasn't in vain. Over the years he has contributed
some truly memorable material to The New Yorker.
