The man who killed him was named Mark Chapman. From what I have read about
it this man was completely obsessed with Holden and began to believe that he
was Holden. He even tried to get his name changed to Holden Caulfield but
the courts would not let him. He decided to kill John because he was a huge
Lennon fan, but he thought John was a hypocrite for owning vacation houses
and buying expensive things. As Holden would put it he was a phony. Chapman
believed that by killing Lennon before he could get too old and become a
complete phony he could somehow preserve his innocence, much the way that
children in Salinger's stories die young to forever be innocent and
uncorrupted.

Also interesting, the man who shot Reagan was a huge fan of Catcher also and
had a copy in his hotel room when the police searched his place.
