Okay, I am an English major, graduating this year. I hope to find a job
for the next few years, and then go back to school later. I am not sure
what I'll be doing for that job I need in a few weeks.
Anyway, to graduate from the honors college here at southern, I needed to
write a thesis, which I did on the female characters in Nine Stories. I
looked at them and then also found connections between them and the women
in Salinger's life, using a lot of Margaret Salinger and Joyce Maynard in
addition to Hamilton, Alexander, and French. Overall, I found that
Salinger has a preference for young females, and seems to feel more
comfortable with them not only in life, but in his fiction too.
I went through each story and looked at pretty much every female
character closely and did some analysis. I concluded that Salinger's
characters are very real, making his work relevant to all readers today.
