i've been dipping into ben yagoda's 'about town', a
history of the new yorker. he reproduces a letter from
gus lobrano (salinger's then-editor) to dorothy olding
(his agent).

the undated (alas) letter regrets that they are
returning jerry's latest story, 'the boy in the people
shooting hat'.

lobrano writes:

"Actually, we feel that we don't know the central
character well enough. We can't be quite sure whether
his fight with Stradlater was caused by his feelings
for June Gallagher, or his own inadequacy about his
age (which is brought into relief by Stradlater's
handsomeness and prowess), or a suggestion of
homosexuality in Bobby. ... Our feeling is that, to be
quite definite and so sympathethic, Bobby would have
to be developed at considerably more length than he is
here."
