To me it is rare indeed to find a writer who shakes you to the
foundation the way I imagine it must have been, say, in 1925 or
so to read the very first stirrings of the young Hemingway. I'm
not saying that David Schickler is a Hemingway yet, but he is
indeed phenomenally talented -- and modest about it as well.
His collection is worth being in that handful-in-75-years group
you proffer. KISSING IN MANHATTAN ... you read about it here.

It is odd ... I tend to want to believe the best in people, not
the worst, so I want to believe you are being genuine and not
sardonic when you say "gee whiz" and offer your own response to
someone else's critical opinion. I know a lot of people get
burned this way and I may be walking into a flaming house, but
I'll still take that chance. I believe in talking things out,
and welcome it, even if it happens that you (Scottie) are poking
fun at my "gee whiz" approach.

You wouldn't do that, now, would you? No, surely not.

I'm waiting. I'm waiting. (Yes, b'fish, I have, through the
good graces of a fellow subscriber, read one of Scottie's two
published novels, and it was quite good and touching and
memorable and very, very sad. Bittersweet. What they call,
these days, honestly felt. Awful descriptive words but THE GIFT
is a lovely book. I've also been fortunate enough to read some
of Cecilia's work too, but I won't embarrass her by praising her
in public, since she blushes so readily.) I'm even looking
forward, you know. So -- sharpen that pen nib, eh?

Cheers,
