for the past dozen years or so richard pevear and larissa volokhonsky have been turning out new translations of many of the russian classics. (they're done 4 or 5 of dostoevsky's, including 'the brothers karamazov'.) i think the critical consensus is these translations are first rate. they are a serious contender against the earlier translations (perhaps dated?) by constance garnett. (i think she was to the translation of russian lit as the muirs were to kafka. i've read that there are new translations of the 3 kafka novels based on newly restored text. i wonder if john o. has read them, especially the new 'trial'?)
