Correct. I completely agree with both of your points, which is why I have
been arguing that none of the actions we could have or did take in the region
at that (or this) particular time were likely to make any real historical
difference either for the politics of the region or for the lives of the
locals in the long term. It's nice to think that we can always make a
difference. But it's not that simple.
