But Tim - or TIM, as I see you've now taken to subscribing
yourself - what would be the point in teasing John about
literary slovenliness if it weren't already obvious he was
excruciatingly obsessional? After all, aside from the fact that
only fairly advanced OCDs play golf, he finds it impossible
to leave unturned even the teenshiest of my teenshy pebbles.
(Not to mention - though I'd rather not - the cruelty, escaping
from between gritted teeth, that so often fuels the obsessional
defence: in this case, mocking a decrepit & essentially harmless
old man with reminders of his grey hairs & proximity to death.)

It's no surprise, of course, to read of his behaviour over
the preparation of his thesis. 'Drove you nearly crazy', did he?
I can well imagine. And can imagine all too easily those endless
corrections written in microscopic script with the needle-point
    pen.

    Scottie B.
