All this scorn for "intellectuals" by people who hang out on listservs
dedicated to literary authors reminds me of the sarcastic comments you hear
about Ren-Fest geeks made by Trekkies. Both might still live in their
parents' basement, but both think they're the cool ones and the other ones
are pathetic.

I've been to Ren- Fests an I have watched Star Trek and I post to this list
serve but how does that exactly make anyone an intellectual? Are you guys
in so desperate need of recruits that you have lowered the standards? To
electronically conversate is Intellectualism? Cool/pathetic? Afraid of a
little non-professional debate John O.? Isn't that the alleged underpinning
of Intellectualism?
Daniel

And in at least one case, I'm not sure if it's just pettiness, the desire to
be considered "crotchety" and thereby somehow quaint and endearing, or just
the grumpiness that comes with being so much closer to the stone than the
forceps, but at this point it's playing like a scratched record.
John O.

Scottie, I often replay the records I enjoy the most over and over again.
Spin it again Scottie.
