In one of Philip Roth's novels from the middle 1960s -- My Life as a Man
or Letting Go, perhaps -- there is a tiny scene at a cocktail party.
Among the guests are an unpleasant couple who spend much of their time
bickering with each other. It is a tiny shock to find that they are "Mr.
and Mrs. Lane Coutell." The wife's name is, of course, Franny. And it
does seem like a kind of hell they have created for themselves in their
marriage.

It was one of those sly little inside jokes, the kind of thing that
makes you do a double-take, like seeing a familiar face walk past you on
the street.

I regret that I can't be more precise about the title, but even a few
months after moving, I can't quite locate all my books....
