i thought it was the eight-fold path of buddhism

It IS the eight-fold path (not that I'm into Buddhism...I've just been
reading a lot of Kerouac lately)

You're right. I'm now trying to figure out where I got Nine from. In
thinking about that I realised there might be significance in Nine anyway -
nine is three times three, and in both Christianity and Buddhism, three is
the key number. In Christianity it is the Trinity (father, son, holy spirit
- and we must remember that other religions do recognise Jesus, but as a
prophet rather than manifestation of God), in Buddhism it is the three
axioms (whose official title escapes me, but have to do with Buddhism's
central idea - that happiness may only be achieved if desire is eradicated)

Hey, maybe he just wrote nine stories. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar :)
