tao and madness

"Self" is conceived, I feel, somewhat differently from
Western/American view of self as source of itself, as arbiter,
        constructor of reality.

I can't speak for any other person who has taken meditation on, however I
wonder, why limit yourself? This statement sounds like a belief that fights
with other beliefs. I don't doubt that at moments reality is constructed by
the self, but I do doubt this as a source of wisdom. I wouldn't call this
tendency "Western" either.
Oh, and I merely tried to say that in my experience inside a psychology
classroom in Chicago, IL, USA over the last 5 months or so I haven't heard the
word "madness" used.

"The Tao does nothing."
