The very fact that Nabokov is on record as saying that good readers `do not
read books for the infantile purpose of identifying oneself with the
characters, and not for the adolescent purpose of learning to live' leads
me to believe that comparing Salinger and Nabokov on anything other than a
purely thematic level would be pretty damn unproductive. It's kind of like
comparing Picasso and da Vinci. They're both in the same field but they're
doing totally different things for totally different reasons.
