I was in the hospital, but the transplant of typing fingers took rather well! The online archive of this list has a welcome page that contains pointers to the US laws governing copyright. People can consult the page (http://www.nyu.edu/acf/staff/oconnort/JDS/) to browse through the laws. As Mattis said, please do not mail copies of the stories (or other work, such as letters) to this list. We would almost certainly find outselves in a difficult spot, and could possibly be required to shut down. I would not want that to happen; certainly most readers here wouldn't want that to happen. If you have a copy of a story and you share it with someone who has no access to research materials, that may fall under "fair use" (see the US law cited above to determine if you are in that category). But it is not "fair use" to use this list to distribute the manuscripts. The Salinger people carefully watch for illicit distribution of material, and take action promptly -- and rightfully so. Salinger owns the content. We can swap privately or do favors for each other, but we are not in the business of running a publishing mill here of Salinger's un- or underpublished work. Please respect the terms under which you joined this list, and don't do that. Cheers! --tim o'connor
