This only proves my point - American history is matter of individual choice
- "Have it your way", as a certain American burger franchise once told us.
We have little if any notion of a COLLECTIVE American history. We lack a
unifying narrative.
I don't mean to imply that American individualism is something to be ashamed
of. I'm convinced, however, that the absence of an American culture has
certain ugly side effects (besides strip malls).
Forgive my skepticism, but were there ever any "real" cowboys?
