Andy:
"I'm sorry, but I miss your point. I used to go to raves (probably at
that
very same warehouse as a matter of fact. NAF?) all the time, and I knew
people older than you who went on a regular basis. That's what they
wanted
to do, so what?"

I'm afraid everyone save for Mattis, God bless him, has missed my point.
My point is only that aging and experience tend to change a person in
ways that are fundamentally irreversible, and this became evident to me
at that rave as I was surrounded by 21 year olds.

"Whether or not someone follows Holden's intellectual and/or moral lead
doesn't really have anything to do with that person's age, I would
think."

I agree with you (and Mattis) that Holden's basic moral/emotional
instincts are ageless, and that anyone of any age can identify with him.
And some of Holden's/Salinger's observations are brilliant. But at the
same time, most adults who can identify with Holden's internal conflicts
have nevertheless by necessity coped with them and moved on. Or, they
end up doing ridiculous things like shooting John Lennon.

Hopefully, with some help from his psychiatrist, Holden will too.
