the authors life is a public one, the life of anyone
supported economically by a fan-base is indebted to that fan-base, for their
lively hood. salinger does get off the hook just because he's brilliant.
that's what I think.

 When you are in the check out line at the local book vendor the author
isn't in your arms waiting to be scanned and paid for , no just one of his
books. Thats what is for sale, notice the price tag or bar code on your
item, that is what you pay for and what is in your hand in the parking lot
outside. I have never seen a book promotion that stated the purchaser of
said book gets a certain % of the author for every copy purchased. I'm sure
Salinger would say: "If you don't like the way I live my life go F*** off or
feel free not to buy my books".
