buddy, your comments and q's are as good as it gets!

I think the value of Joyce Maynard's book (beyond its one-sidedness
as you wisely note) is that it does show Salinger as a human being
who at times seemed indistinguishable from the vulgar beings the
Glasses see through.

Forgive me, I've been reading published Salinger in backwards order
since last night for two lousy quotes and somehow I've turned this
into a Po Lo kind of hunt and mostly what I've found is how much of a
detestable little section man I really am...from "Zooey" I just heard
"'Phooey,' he said, and resumed using his razor. 'Phooey I say, on
all white-shoe college boys who edit their campus literary magazines.
Give me an honest con man any day.'"

I let other's tackle "The Heart" story unless no one else chimes in, will
