"Why can't there be false opinions?"
I suppose that there could be false opinions, but personally I believe that,
unless there's something that can be proved(2+2=4), people can think what
they want on the subject and they can't be wrong. It's their thoughts. And
aren't thoughts really the only guarenteed thing anyone has in life?
"
... almost as invigorating as the smell of napalm
    in the morning ...."
yum, napalm! ;)
"No, opinions can be wrong too :). And you're not talking about opinions
(Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream is better than Breyer's), you're talking about
the reception of Christianity in the public sphere -- which is a matter of
factual occurence, it's something we can observe."
"That's what I was wondering :). I think she's confusing opinion about
facts with opinion about taste. Ben and Jerry's is better than Breyer's Ice
Cream is an opinion about taste and can't be wrong -- well, everyone knows
Ben and Jerry's is better, but still -- some people may have defective
tastebuds :). The relative reception of the teaching of the Bible vs. the
teaching of Islamic lit. is an opinion about facts, though -- about trends.
They're harder to observe, but are still observable. I think it's possible
to have a wrong opinion about these types of subjects."
It is possible that I've blurred the lines between taste opinion and fact
opinion, but I still don't think anyone can be wrong on the subject because
everyone views things differently. And as long as there are different views
there will be different opinions, and I just don't think anyone can say that
people are wrong for thinking something. It's possible that you're right,
but remember, this all my opinion. ;)
And just to settle the debate, Breyer's icepops are the best. :)
