roots of Tennenbaums

 
"The Show" ... you know, *The Royal Tennenbaums* has more interesting,
more compelling links with DFWallace's *Infinite Jest*. It's a tennis
thing. Tennis and substance abuse. The cigarette smoking in
*Tennenbaums* clearly comes straight from Salinger, but the drugs, the
tennis, the adopted (gifted-adopted and troubled-adopted), and the
Peneloped/Gertrude mother come from Wallace. *Tennenbaums* is *Infinite
Jest* minus the *Hamlet* material.
