Or does the fact that Billing incites the boys in their proclamations to be Vikings and heathens lend to it a certain cynicism that changes the meaning...

phoniness, as does the quote from Enemy of the People.

It's denying humanity to some extent ("weiner dogs?!"), and Billing
perhaps does it more seriously and directly ("we're all going to be heathens"). I
chose the latter passage for its parallels to CITR, as the mother's
interjection sort of reminds me of an adult world interrupting the fantasies of
youth... this time, however, the fantasies don't seem to be a longing for
something genuinely human, and consequently I think they are futile. You
might disagree, but that movie seems like kind of a distaction (or a subtle
willingness not to confront what Holden must). Maybe this passage will rile up
the weiner dogs, whose problems are all solved

luke

DR. STOCKMANN: You are fighting for the truth, and that's why you're
alone. And that makes you strong. We're the strongest people in the world...

The crowd is heard angrily calling outside. Another rock comes through
the window.

DR. STOCKMANN:...and the strong must learn to be lonely!

The crowd noise gets louder. He walks upstage toward the windows as a
wind rises and the curtains start to billow out toward him.

     The Curtain Falls.
