My weariness was with Salinger's assumption
that a profusion of lists & details is somehow
endearing & engaging, inviting us to ooh & aah
& smile indulgently like a pack of Sunday afternoon
visitors to the Regency Pavilion in Brighton.
    That's the Pavilion, right?
The iceberg is where old Hem writes:
'You know how it is there in Havana in the early morning....'
&, by visualising it so clearly in his own mind, has already
    - & magically - conveyed it to us without the need for further
elaboration. (Though he does, in fact, add a couple more
    not strictly necessary details.)
