I ran past the first watchman. Then I was horrified,
ran back again and said to the watchman: "I ran
through here while you were looking the other way."
The watchman gazed ahead of him and said nothing. "I
suppose I really oughtn't to have done it," I said.
The watchman still said nothing. "Does your silence
indicate permission to pass?" ...

[this is the entire fragment in "Dearest Father:
Stories and Other Writings", pp.322-23

...The watchmen turned towards me with a bewildered face.
I took my pad out and scratched out my question again.
He stared at the note and took my pen to add his reply.
It read, "Did you not hear my whistle? You neatly dressed lawyers
are always mocking me, are you surprised that I read?"
I turned the paper over and asked "do I have permission to pass?"
The watchman with my pen and pad wrote, "Am I your father? Pass
at your own peril." With that I tucked our words in to my pocket
and stood there throughout the night muttering to myself.
