Jim, the Christmas letters and stories were meant exclusively for his
children who he told many stories and I believe they were published by his
son Christopher after his death. The Hobbit was initially written for his
children but they lobbied for it to be included in his larger mythopia, and
so he did as testified by his endless re-writing and I statement in a letter
to a fan. Notice that the hobbit is a lot more playful, notice his account
of the invention of golf.
Daniel

PS Tolkein himself illustrated the Hobbit, and some of his Christmas
letters/stories to his children when they were young. I wonder if he
has different standards for adults than for children, or if he only
developed this idea later in life?

Jim
