Hi.

Up to this point I have been a strict *reader* of this list, and I must
say that I have enjoyed it hugely, no immensly (better word?)

I really don't think Franny is pregnant with a baby, what I believe is
that she is begining to understand that she is, like all of us, able to
give birth to something much more than a baby. I guess what I'm trying
to say is athat Franny is a remarkable young woman who has a desire to
transcend the physical. I think the allusions to a sexual relationship
between her and Lane show how little support there is for this kind of
desire in a university world full of Section Men (I call them
Dissertation Monkeys) and football games and being in the "right place
with an unimpeacably right-looking-girl." In other words their sexual
relationship is not equal or for that matter all that loving. Franny is
having sex with Lane, but Lane is f***ing her, because that's what he's
interested in. To Lane Franny's coat is a logical extnsion of her. It
is this sort of gross physicality that Franny's trying to escape.

Also, he said, hands-on-hips, How come no one ever accused Mohammed,
Jesus, The Buddha, The Bal Shem-Tov, or even Joan of Arc of being
Pregnant. (All but Jesus and Joan are reputed to have lived "wild"
lives up to their spiritual discoveries)

Thanks for putting up with my rant,
