>New to the list and have just been sitting here reading this >continuing thread that started with a commencement speech and has now >gone on to the evils of beauty magazines. I think I saw Salinger's >name mentioned once or twice. I was wondering if a thread continues >until it no longer resembles its' original intent, does some stand up >and yell "digression" ? Yelling "digression" is always good and legal here. Those of us who get the reference will laugh. Those of us who don't recognize it will (patiently, we hope) privately fill in the people who don't understand. Sometimes it's hard for us who have a longer sense of continuity to remember that there are always people coming and going, and that this must be mystifying to someone who just (proverbially) walks in. I guess that these current threads are really sensible in the context of the list as a community -- points here and there in these recent threads have come up previously in large or small discussions. If you're interested in a more balanced view of the list's last few months, point your favorite web browser to: http://www.nyu.edu/acf/staff/oconnort/JDS/ This contains the archives since June. In fact, that reminds me to do an update for the traffic from the last week or so ... once my headache goes away! Cheers! --tim o'connor
