Yes - just today I was reading the second half of the massive 2 volume biography of Nabokov (`The American Years') and was thinking just that - Humbert, like Salinger, does some nasty things, likes to both puzzle and illuminate us, disgust and delight us - but in both cases, against massive tides that should theoretically push us in the complete opposite direction - you end up both feeling for them and liking them. And that's a credit to the audacity and ... perhaps skill isn't the right word - of both Salinger and Nabokov.
