I hope this is not a stupid question...Was it William Shawn who edited
Salinger's work, or was it William Maxwell or Katherine White? Reading
Hapworth, I get the feeling that there is definitely something different
going on, a different feel to Hapworth from the earlier stories,
something looser (not a pejorative term), and I was wondering if this
might be attributed to the tendency of writers to agree to editing at
one point and to put their foot down later...??
