Folks, I must say, this has been a splendid weekend of prolific musings and insight on Salinger and his works. I am overjoyed to to discover that so many of the mysteries in my mind re: JDS are shared by others, and reading your questions and theories has brought me great satisfaction, similar to what I feel when reading the works of JDS himself. (An odd kind of satisfaction, granted -- the kind you get when you realize that there are no simple answers, and there'll be ample mystery in which to revel indefinitely.) Both Seymour and Buddy speak of being unbearably happy. I suspect that may be how JDS sometimes feels about writing (not publishing). And it is apparently how some of us sometimes feel about reading his works. It works out so nicely (except for his aversion to publishing). I will keep my fingers crossed for posthumous publication of more JDS works (assuming I outlive him). Earlier would be fine also. (Is prehumous a word?) In the meantime, I'll pace myself on reading Salinger's works -- there isn't that much of it, and it merits savoring. This listserv fills in the gaps beautifully. Maybe some of you have too much time on your hands, to which I say, bravo! I am a better reader than writer, and I thank you for the ride. I am just on bearable side of happiness. (I am at work, after all.)
