Hello my name is jake shafer [aka willie keith] and I am a fourth year
literature major at antioch college in yellow springs ohio. I am
currently staring down the barrel of my senior thesis which attempts to
be a detailed examination of the great jd salinger. I have been
researching this topic for the past few months and discovering many
things about salinger which I have found to be illuminating and at times
even problematic. The brunt of my research is a an attempt to unravel
the mystique of salinger's carear, i am interested in the external
forces which shaped salinger's work <ie his participation in four of the
bloodiest campaings during world war two and the altering of his prose
by certain literary magazines in order to make them more cost effective>
It seems to me that there is an ongoing resurgence of salinger's
popularity stemming from the rumur that hapworth is set to be published,
joyce maynards new book and peoples infaliable desire to flush him out
of hiding, some of us readers feel that he owes us something and that he
has gotten away with his hermitude for too long. Just look at the result
of ian Hamilton's book "In Search of jd salinger" and you can see just
how hungry we are for salinger's resurfacing.
The current trajectory of my research has led me to the interent and I
am amazed by the wealth of information available now regariding jd
salinger. besides the baanafish homepage, there is also a jd salinger
chat room and a site about an upcoming book entitled letters to jd
salinger. Theres a lot of data to digest and I'm planning on doing just
that.
So that's what I'm doing this summer how about you all? I'd be very
interested to discuss whatever interests you about good old jd at
anythime.
