I would give credence to the idea that War has mutated over the years to
say the least - perhaps from the Orange of World War II to the Apple of
the Gulf War. (And Vietnam somewhere in-between)
If you'll notice, most of the recent American wars are fought from
computer terminals, and American casualties are few enough to print on
a two page spread in TIME. Foreign casualties are another story...

I believe this is attributed to what we call in the business "The broken
window fallacy".
