Well, speaking as a film gal myself (recently clawed my way into the lower ranks of the industry as a spec screenwriter) I think film *can* be art, but a good 98% of it is simply there to make a lot of rich guys even richer. When you're talking about film you're talking about a lot of different intentions and beliefs - some movies aim to become art, some succeed, some fail, some don't even try. You can't compare a Peter Greenaway film to a National Lampoon movie, it's like trying to compare Andy Warhol and Leonardo da Vinci - two people entirely at cross purposes but who both, almost by coincidence, are working in the same industry.
