"Seriously (well, semi-seriously at least; more than that I cannot promise),

isn't what Mr Bowman is saying what has been said since the 60's, that JDS
is appealing to the "high brow" and "middle brow" audience alike, but not
for the same reasons?"

Now there's an interesting distinction. My own initial interest in Salinger
(which began with Franny and Zooey) was probably of the "middle brow" sort.
I was particularly fascinated with Zooey, the aristrocrat of the family.
Without the benefit of an Upper East Side upbringing, or even an upper
middle class upbringing for that matter, I could only aspire to his
righteous, compelling snobbery.
