Don't forget my favorite bathroom scene where Holden's dancing around a says,
"Look at me! I'm the goddamn governor's son!"

As I was making my way through my annual reread of Catcher, I was struck
by a line Phoebe says when answering her mother while Holden is hiding in
her closet. I'm sure most dedicated Salinger readers have noticed that
much of the "action" in his works takes place in bathrooms. Salinger
really a has thing for them, it seems. Anyway, their mother asks "Have you
said your prayers?" and Phoebe responds "I said them in the bathroom." My
eyes bugged out and I had to read that sequence again. Given the lengthy
Zooey bathroom scene, Franny's collapse in one, the scribbling of "Raise
High" on the bathroom mirror, Salinger seems to use the bathroom very
significantly. I know I've touched on this before, but I'm looking for
more comments on this one.
Thanks,
D.
