In answer to a couple of questions, I am sending this out to say that yes, the bananafish list is somehow still alive, but that it's been a quiet few days. In case you've been receiving little or no mail, that is because there appear to have been no submissions recently. On the other hand, if you HAVE sent messages in during the last few days, please let me know directly -- it's always possible that there's a subtle problem lurking under the hood of a machine somewhere. It's funny that in this world of too much background noise, some of us get unnerved by silence. --tim OBSalinger: The New Yorker just completed yet another physical move. They had moved from their old building to one across the street, but since they were sucked up by Conde Nast, it was only a matter of time before they were "consolidated" with the other magazines CN owns. Last week was moving day. There was a picture in the NY Times of files being relocated, and I couldn't help wondering whether any contained material from that long-silent writer of short stories we know and admire. The saddest part was that, in contrast to the old days of the magazine, the new one is short on office space, so some staff writers are forced to work from home -- long gone are the days when a JDS could drop in and find an empty room and typewriter to work on a piece that needed finishing. There is something infinitely depressing about that, I think.
