I've always thought that was a puzzling Carver story too, but I kinda focused on the dynamic between the man and his wife. This is just from membry, but it seemed like she was the type wanting to enjoy herself regardless of the circumstances, and he was a bit more of the depressed type. She loved life and he missed it, and as a result she was slipping out of his grasp.

Seems like that's what I thought when I read it, anyhow.

Now I have to go back and reread it ;)

My favorite Carver story is the piece on the death of Chekov.
