this summer, when i would go into work with my mother, i would read to her
from Nine Stories. the first story i read was "Just Before the War With the
Eskimos". When I asked her what i thought of it, her reply was, "He's pretty
good. I like that young man. He's trying to show off for the girl, but he
puts the butt in his pocket so as to not upset his parents. that's a nice
detail."
My mother's the coolest. How many people do you know who would concentrate
on that after a first reading?
