If you're into Plato and the traditional Greek
philosophes, I highly recommend a book called "The
Trial of Socrates." Most of our knowledge of Socrates
comes from the writings of Plato. This book does a
really good job(without getting too complicated or
confusing) of giving a more accurate portrayal of
Socrates since Plato's is biased(being an admirer of
Socrates). It goes into other writers of the time that
wrote/talked about Socrates whether in support,
ridicule, etc...

Changing topics: Salinger must've been a pretty big
fan of Dostoyevsky. In one of the stories of "Nine
Stories"(forgot which), a Dostoyevsky quote comes up,
something like:

"..What is hell? I maintain that it is the inability
to love..."

This is a direct quote from the character of Father
Zossima of "The Brothers Karamazov." I'm pretty far
into this book, and came across this quote that
Salinger alludes to.

I've also found reading Nietzsche's criticisms of
Plato, Socrates, and the sophists to be a good balance.:)
