I think the Colin Powell situation remains quite clear. Basically, he was
chosen for two reasons beyond the fact that he was more than qualified to
help run this country:
1)His selection is most definitely a symbol of the Republican Party moving
forward with the times and proving to Americans that they are no longer the
party of the middle-aged white male. President-Elect Bush does not want to
preach from the pulpit if he is not going to live the life. His speech in
the RNC was for real; the GOP wants to unite people of all socio-economic
backgrounds. Bush said it himself while introducing his appointments, "I
want to show the American people that hard work and determination pays off,
regardless of race or creed."
Before people jump on this, be reminded that of the first 5 cabinet
appointments Bush has made, 4 of them have included a minority or a female.
I feel this truly proves that the Republican party is not interested in
"token diversity," but, rather, is searching for the most qualified from
all areas on the board.
2)Powell's apointment results directly from the conservative ideological
belief of strong military commitment. The best way to show the American
people and the people serving this country in the armed forces that you
plan to strengthen and modernize the military is to include its members in
your administration. If America felt that Colin Powell could lead our
country in the time of war, then how could possible not be qualified as a
leader? This man did nothing wrong: he executed successfully in the Gulf,
helping to save America from skirmishes over one of the most important
natural resources in the world while getting the Iraquis out of Kuwait as
quickly and as cleanly as possible. In terms of brotherhood, America
protected its allies just as it needed to. And in terms of American
interest, it was protected to the fullest extent.

NOTE: If the Dems had won the White House and did the same thing, they
would be praised for bringing in one of the best generals in the last 50
years. They would be applauded for their inclusion of minorities and their
ability to reach across party lines to develop an administration. Yet,
since the republicans appointed Gen. Powell: it's a travesty, he is a
terrible leader, he is a token minority, the Gulf War was a failure, "uncle
tom powell," etc, etc. STOP THE HYPOCRACY.

>From the right and proud,
