My wife is the deputy political editor of the Hartford Courant and
has followed the polls very closely during the election period. I
told her this summer that we would elect Bush because America is
anti-intellectual and relates more directly to him as our village
idiot than it could to Gore as Clinton's fool. She thought the polls
indicated Gore would win. I think Salinger may have been helping me
understand America's love affair with vulgarity and stupidity. As
always, he's one of the few writers whose ideas never fail me...Will
