Regarding the election, a couple of thoughts:

During the campaign, I wondered if perhaps Gore's heart wasn't in it
entirely. Bush, too. They weren't offering an inspiring picture of their
possible tenures and the next four years for the country. I certainly
wondered if they both are in politics largely due to being the *sons* of
men who chose politics for themselves. I like Gore and voted for him, but
he didn't seem as eager to fight for and take the job as I'd expected he'd
be (look who he didn't manage to handily trounce -- I am sooo unimpressed
with dubya -- Gore could have brilliantly trounced him but didn't).

I agree with the legal challenges to the counts. The courts are there for
this sort of thing. The challenges did not go on for very long. I think
they were in the area of reasonability.

At any rate, I think fighting for recounts drew attention to the problems
with different voting machines which needs to be addressed. For example, I
didn't understand why anyone would fight for a merely dimpled ballot until
I read about these machines that, upon completing the vote, punched the
holes out of sight of the voter: the supporting rubber(?) strips behind
these machines would get brittle or worn down and were making the votes not
get punched. The people setting up the machines would avoid placing any
choices in the first column because it was so worn down, but what about the
second column? I thought that votes from such machines should take dimples
as votes.

I have never liked the electoral college and would like things to go to a
popular vote. The electoral college and the policy of all votes of a state
going to the winner of that state force politicians to cater to certain
states over others and that is unfair. I wonder who would have won the
popular vote if campaigns did not focus on certain states.

I agree.
