"How the Grinch Stole Christmas," by Dr. Seuss. It's a children's early
reading book. Dr. Seuss always comes up with strange names for the
creature-people he makes. The Grinch is quite like Charles Dicken's
Scrouge. There was a really nicely done animated TV special made of this
years ago (1966, according to amazon.com) that is shown every year on TV.
Also, this year, Jim Carrey stars in a movie about the Grinch.

i have heard that the story is a parable about commercialism taking over
christmas, at the expense of good taste and the true meaning of christmas.
the grinch represents the forces of capitalism attempting to use christmas
for their own ends. that's why a big-budget hollywood film version of the
tale, if you accept this interpretation, is so ironic, and, ultimately,
odious. it would seem that, in reality, the grinch has won, or very nearly
so. christmas, to me, is a time not of joy and peace on earth and good will
towards men, but a time of long lines at the mall, rude salespeople, even
ruder fellow shoppers, and absolutely having to get a certain gift for your
kid, who will not be happy with anything else. if the network news is to be
believed, a "good" christmas is one in which sales outdid those of the year
before. the grinch, no doubt, would be pleased.

'tis the season to be jolly
