sure, sure, maybe he's written all that stuff, maybe he's got a whole
library of Great American Novels at home, neatly labeled and filed for
publication, and if he gave a damn what you and me and the rest of the
peanut gallery had to say it about he'd publish all of it and hit the talk
show circuit to promote himself. meanwhile, in or around 1965, he was
pretty damn intent on writing something almost everyone surely hates. maybe
he did it on purpose, maybe he was trying to inspire disinterest in his
work, i don't know. i'm just defending his prerogative to write crap if
that's what pleases him, and his little cult following be damned. i just
read "the inverted forest," and it was so good, it made me so depressed that
i felt like i wanted to fall out of a tree (that's not a pun, those are the
words that came to mind). it absolutely tore my guts out, and i can't tell
you how much i wish he'd publish all sorts of books and short stories like
that. but if he wants to be "selfish," as no doubt many people would say he
is, and hole up in cornish and write total garbage that never sees the light
of the editors desk, than so be it. Cheers to you, Jerome!!! Damn the
torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead!!!

ps do you secretly want to scream "Digression!!!" at him for writing
hapworth?

'... do you expect that he would keep writing citr and
for esme over and over again, until he dies? isn't that
     intellectual suicide? ...'

It wouldn't have been intellectual suicide to have tried
to tackle, for example, the character complexities of
a grown up woman; or the long-haul ambiguities & enrichments
of a relationship that lasts longer than a week; or the role of
political action in a life; or how one deals with the prospect
     of one's own extinction; or what it means to be a father - a son;
or how to live a life where there are more terrible propositions
than those to be found between the covers of a do-it-yourself
     yoga manual. Or....
